New York Garment District Goes Ecommerce

The New York Garment District has been developed into a social networking and e commerce venture. The site has a temporary back end selling platform at Ebay stores. What's really fascinating is that this domain name has been virtually dormant for the last five years and even more incredible that it wasn't registered until November 2002. Most premium domain names like this were all taken by the late 90's. The owner of the NewYorkGarmentDistrict.com also owns NewYorkFashionDistrict.com. The owner says that there are additional plans to develop the "fashion version" of the name, but that it has not been determined yet whether it will be developed as a stand-alone.

The company is currently testing out various selling platforms and merchandise. The company has made a small investment into top designer women's dresses. These stunning dresses are available to the general public at 70% retail. They feature many different colors, styles and sizes. After this initial test the company plans to move to other lines like mens clothing, children's clothing, casual wear, urban fashion etc. The company wants to brand itself as the "MySpace for fashion."

They choose the Dolphin platform as the back end that their content resides on. As they work through the bugs it appears from a tour of the NewYorkGarmentDistrict.com that they could be the ultimate social networking site for fashion. There are forums, groups, classifieds, music, video and all the general bells and whistles. Additionally, user can set up their own free social networking fashion profiles.

If the NewYorkGarmentDistrict.com can drive the traffic this site could get real sticky, which we all know is a good thing.
